At Manby Lodge we provide a broad and balanced programme of physical education that we believe every child should have; with activities designed to be fun, purposeful, and regular. The range of physical activities we offer through our PE curriculum and through extra-curricular opportunities is wide and includes games, ball sports, athletics, gymnastics, dance, and outdoor education. What we offer is designed to satisfy the needs, abilities and interests of all individual children.

At Manby Lodge Infant School we provide children with the provision and opportunity to join in with lots of physical activity. P.E is extremely important, and a healthy body is fundamental to developing a positive mindset, which is essential for well-being. We use the REAL PE Scheme and its three areas are:
- PE develops lifelong participation in activity (health and well -being)
- Helps children reach their full potential in PE and Sport (competitive best)
- Develops whole child / Essential learning skills.
All children spend at least 2 hours per week taking part physical activity. In lessons, pupils focus on utilising the resources provided by REAL PE, and the lessons are concentrated on developing skills that we apply to all sports.
The children apply these skills to identified sports such as football, rugby, tennis and athletics. We also have an expert team from ‘Multi Sports’ that teach and coach children all these sports. The coaches work alongside teachers to support the development of teachers in this area.
Children are also encouraged to develop the important values of teamwork, respect and fairness in these lessons. We also promote our school behaviour expectations of being Safe, Ready and Respectful. We have an annual Sports Day, and all the children participate which is followed by a school picnic on the grounds. This day is greatly enjoyed by all.
We promote competitive opportunities for all children and those children Year 2 take part in competitions such as Mini-Olympics with local schools. All children run a Mini-Manby Mile and this has a positive impact on their well-being. For the last two years children have also taken part in the London Mini Marathon.
We offer a wide range of extra-curricular sports clubs: (for example) yoga, tennis, basketball, football, multi-skills and dance clubs. Please see the School Clubs Page for a timetable of all the clubs on offer.
Sports Premium Funding
In April 2013, the Department for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport announced new funding of £150 million to support the delivery of PE and school sport. Funding is being allocated to all state-maintained secondary, primary, middle and special schools (including non-maintained special schools), academies and pupil referral units with primary aged pupils and is committed until 2025.
Schools must spend this designated additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport but will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
At Manby Lodge there are 5 key indicators that we aim to meet when planning how to utilise the funding, these include:
- the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity
- the profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
- increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
- broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
- increased participation in competitive sport
